Apple OLED Screen: Are OLED Screens the Future for Apple?

Apple OLED Screen: There is no denying the fact that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) must have some interest in OLED screens. There have been rumors of this in the past, and the Cupertino-based company is making moves in the present that lead to this conclusion.

Most recently, as is being reported by OLED-info.com, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has hired Dr. Lee Jeung-jil to join the company. While this may not sound like a big deal, he was previously a former research fellow at LG Display and knows a thing or two about this technology.

Here is what the brief announcement has to say:

“Apple has hired a new executive into its Display group – Dr. Jueng Jil Lee, a former research fellow at LG Display, who apparently was involved with printing technology research. Dr. Lee’s previous employee (before LGD) was Cambridge Display Technology, the P-OLED pioneer (now owned by Sumitomo).”

With this hire, it would be hard for Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) to deny an interest in OLED screens.

The question is: what does this screen technology have to offer that others do not?

Above all else, OLED screens are thinner and provide better battery life – two things that are important to both iPad and iPhone users.

For now, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) will continue to rely on traditional LCD panels. However, look for this to possibly change in the future with the addition of Dr. Lee Jeung-jil.

The same article concludes by saying:

“Apple is interested in OLEDs, and the company already has several patents involving flexible OLEDs, OLED based BLUs for LCDs, OLED control schemes and others. Rumors about OLED products from Apple keep coming (the latest one involving 50″ bendable TVs is rather dubious). I guess an OLED iOS product will come eventually – the real question is when.”

Do you think the hiring of Dr. Lee Jeung-jil away from LG Display means that Apple has something big on the horizon? Or is the company simply positioning itself for something farther down the road?
