iOS Market Share: Apple iOS Grows Market Share in United States

iOS Market Share: Backed by the launch of the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 5, in correspondence with the popularity of the 4 and 4s models, the Cupertino-based company was able to grow its market share in a key category in the United States.

Apple Inc. (AAPL) to be Added to Several WisdomTree ETFsApple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is actually the smart money’s second favorite publicly traded company but hedge funds have started dumping Apple in favor of a surprising financial stock (see which stock hedge funds are buying like crazy).

According to comScore’s latest report, covering a three-month time frame that ended in January 2013, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) dipped into Google’s market share while maintaining its spot at the top of the list.

Here is a brief overview to give you a better idea of what is going on:

“Apple ranked as the top smartphone manufacturer with 37.8 percent OEM market share, while Google Android led as the #1 smartphone platform with 52.3 percent platform market share.”

As you can see, even though Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) took the top spot in one category the Android operating system bested it in another. This goes a long way in showing that the two tech giants continue to jockey for top honors throughout a variety of categories.

Here is a further breakdown of the information, including data on where Samsung checked in:

“129.4 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones (55 percent mobile market penetration) during the three months ending in January, up 7 percent since October. Apple ranked as the top OEM with 37.8 percent of U.S. smartphone subscribers (up 3.5 percentage points from October). Samsung ranked second with 21.4 percent market share (up 1.9 percentage points), followed by HTC with 9.7 percent share, Motorola with 8.6 percent and LG with 7 percent (up 0.3 percentage points).”

When it comes to smartphone platforms, Android remains number one with 52.3 percent market share. Fortunately for Apple, the company closed the gap a bit by gaining 3.5 percentage points to 37.8 percent.
