Takeda Pharmaceutical (TAK) Gets Priority Review. Can Zasocitinib Win in Psoriasis?

Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited (NYSE:TAK) secured priority review for zasocitinib, with an FDA decision targeted for early 2027. Strong trial results support its potential, while labeling, coverage and treatment persistence will shape launch success.

Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited (NYSE:TAK) announced on September 14 that the FDA accepted its New Drug Application for zasocitinib under priority review for adults with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. The target action date falls in the first quarter of calendar 2027, creating a defined regulatory window for the investigational once-daily oral treatment.

Zasocitinib inhibits tyrosine kinase 2, or TYK2, which participates in inflammatory signaling. For investors, the opportunity rests on combining meaningful skin clearance with oral convenience. Approval, prescribing restrictions and commercial access will determine how much of that opportunity becomes revenue.

Bull Case

The application includes the pivotal Phase 3 LATITUDE PsO 3001 and 3002 studies, which met their primary and ranked secondary endpoints. At week 16, 71.4% and 69.2% of zasocitinib-treated patients achieved clear or almost clear skin on the static Physician Global Assessment, compared with 10.7% and 12.6% receiving placebo.

Those results give Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited a substantial efficacy foundation. The randomized studies also included apremilast as an active comparator, making the development program relevant to an established oral treatment option.

Separately, Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited reported positive topline results in June from a head-to-head study against deucravacitinib. At week 16, zasocitinib achieved statistical superiority on the primary endpoint of complete skin clearance, corresponding to a 100% improvement from baseline in the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI 100). That finding strengthens the potential case for differentiation among oral therapies.

A daily pill could appeal to patients seeking an alternative to injections. If the final label and coverage support straightforward prescribing, the clinical results could help physicians identify patients who would benefit from switching treatments.

Bear Case

Priority review accelerates the FDA’s evaluation without lowering the approval standard. The agency must still assess the complete efficacy and safety package, and the eventual label could influence eligibility, monitoring requirements, and prescribing decisions.

Tolerability also matters for sustained use. In the pivotal trials, treatment-emergent adverse events through week 16 occurred in 62.1% of patients receiving zasocitinib, versus 46.9% receiving placebo. These figures include events regardless of whether treatment caused them. For a chronic therapy, continued use will depend on patients finding the balance between benefit and treatment burden worthwhile.

Commercial competition adds another hurdle. Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited would need to establish a position against existing oral and injectable treatments. Insurers could require prior authorization or earlier use of other therapies, while rebates and patient assistance could reduce realized revenue.

Launch spending on physician education, sales support and patient services may precede meaningful sales. Strong initial prescriptions would therefore be only one measure of progress. Paid prescriptions, coverage restrictions, net pricing and refill patterns would provide a clearer picture of commercial traction.

Hedge Fund Sentiment

The filings available so far reflect positions held before Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited reported FDA acceptance and priority review for zasocitinib. Insider Monkey’s database showed 24 hedge funds holding Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited at the end of 2Q2026, up from 18 funds three months earlier.

Conclusion

Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited has stronger launch visibility and persuasive clinical evidence for zasocitinib. A successful launch still requires a favorable FDA decision, a workable label, and reimbursement that supports sustained treatment. Coverage, paid prescriptions, and treatment persistence will show whether regulatory progress becomes a durable commercial contribution.
