Should You Buy WisdomTree (WT) Stock After Its Latest Crypto Move?

Supported by a 14.5% five-year average annual revenue growth rate, robust annual operating cash flow generation exceeding $90 million, and a capital-light model yielding free cash flow conversion margins above 25%, WisdomTree (NYSE:WT) represents a compelling asset management compounder with a return on equity nearing 19.3%. As artificial intelligence and digital architecture sweep through high finance, much like how Anthropic just put Claude inside Schwab and BlackRock to reshape modern portfolio management, WisdomTree is advancing its own structural transformation from a traditional ETF sponsor into a blockchain-native infrastructure leader.

The firm’s strategic evolution gained major momentum on September 17, when WisdomTree announced a landmark partnership with crypto infrastructure provider MoonPay. The deal embeds WisdomTree’s tokenized money market fund, WTGXX, directly into MoonPay’s consumer app and stablecoin reserve framework, seamlessly connecting the company’s record underlying asset gathering and operating margin expansion to the rapid growth of digital asset settlement.

Tapping A 35 Million Account Network

The structural mechanics of the MoonPay deal carry far more long-term weight than the initial headline suggests. By partnering with MoonPay, WisdomTree gains access to a network spanning over 35 million accounts and 1,700 integration partners, a vast distribution footprint that its proprietary broker-dealer, WisdomTree Securities, could never replicate independently. Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Steinberg underscored the strategic rationale: as stablecoins fundamentally transform digital money movement, MoonPay offers a frictionless ramp for retail and institutional investors to park capital directly into WTGXX. Both management teams view this integration as an initial building block for future international tokenized fund offerings.

Crucially, this digital expansion builds upon a core business that is already firing on all cylinders. WisdomTree closed the second quarter of 2026 with a record $162.9 billion in assets under management/AUM, marking its sixth consecutive quarter of record AUM and a steep rise from $126.1 billion a year earlier. Scale drove top-line operating revenue to $177.2 million, up 11.1% sequentially from the first quarter of 2026, while operating margin expanded 780 basis points year-over-year to 40.5%. This expansion highlights the company’s pricing power and operational leverage, as incremental inflows flow straight to the bottom line with minimal marginal cost. Industry recognition has followed, including honors as Best Digital Asset Fund Issuer in North America and Best Tokenized Transfer Agent, alongside the strategic hiring of John Whelan as Head of Strategy for Digital Assets in June.

The Cost Of Cleaning Up The Balance Sheet

While core operations are compounding rapidly, WisdomTree’s GAAP financial statements reflect significant temporary noise stemming from balance sheet optimization. The firm spent the first half of 2026 aggressively retiring its convertible debt obligations, recognizing $68.9 million in losses on note repurchases over the six months. This capital restructuring caused a temporary GAAP disruption, driving a $23.1 million net loss in the first quarter of 2026 despite strong underlying revenue growth. Additionally, interest expense surged 170.5% year-over-year as the company carried higher debt loads at prevailing market rates before retirement.

These non-deductible repurchase costs inflated WisdomTree’s six-month effective tax rate to 51.9%, well above the 21% federal statutory rate. Importantly, these accounting impacts do not stem from deterioration in core asset management cash flows, but rather from the capital outlay required to eliminate debt overhang. Nevertheless, investors must weigh these balance sheet maneuvers against the risks of WisdomTree’s digital asset push. Management’s own disclosures emphasize that blockchain technology remains relatively new and untested, operating under evolving regulatory frameworks with risks of fraud, theft, or network inaccessibility. Furthermore, while WTGXX targets a stable $1.00 net asset value per share, it carries no FDIC insurance and cannot guarantee principal protection.

What The Smart Money Sees

Institutional sentiment remains cautiously attentive: hedge fund ownership edged down slightly from 35 to 34 funds in the latest reporting period, reflecting minor portfolio rebalancing rather than institutional capitulation. Meanwhile, short interest stands at an elevated 17.34% of float, indicating organized skepticism.

Short sellers appear to be targeting the stock due to temporary GAAP net losses from debt repurchases, execution risks in the tokenization pipeline, and potential fee compression across traditional ETF lineups. However, with WisdomTree trading at a forward P/E multiple of 17.30, as of September 24, the stock presents an intriguing valuation picture. For a firm delivering 40%+ operating margins and double-digit revenue growth, a 17.30 forward P/E is far from overly expensive, yet it refrains from pricing in aggressive blue-sky growth from the MoonPay deal. This creates a balanced risk-reward profile where the market has priced in solid baseline execution while leaving tokenization upside optionality largely unvalued.

Two Different Bets In One Stock

Ultimately, WisdomTree offers investors two distinct growth engines bundled into a single ticker. On one side sits a traditional asset management compounder steadily building AUM through organic inflows, strategic distribution, and expanding profit margins. On the other side sits a high-upside option on tokenized financial architecture, powered by distribution partners like MoonPay. For the traditional story to re-rate the stock, the noise from debt repurchases must clear, allowing unburdened cash flow and GAAP profitability to take center stage. For the digital asset story to succeed, broader stablecoin adoption and regulatory clarity must remain favorable. How the market chooses to price these twin catalysts over the coming quarters will determine WisdomTree’s next financial chapter.
