Intuit (INTU) Bets on AI and Big Bets. Can They Offset Slower Growth?

Intuit Inc. (NASDAQ:INTU) used its Investor Day to reinforce its long-term growth strategy rather than introduce a major change to its financial outlook. On September 18, UBS reiterated its Neutral rating and $360 price target following the company’s reaffirmation of its fiscal 2027 guidance and its emphasis on artificial intelligence, customer acquisition, and scaling its larger growth initiatives.

According to UBS, Intuit reiterated the key building blocks, performance indicators, and early proof points underpinning its medium-term outlook. The company expects fiscal 2027 revenue to increase 9% to 10% to between $23.28 billion and $23.51 billion, while GAAP diluted earnings per share is expected to reach $20.12 to $20.36, representing 22% to 24% year-over-year growth.

UBS said Intuit highlighted scaling its so-called “Big Bets,” which now represent approximately 30% of revenue, as an important driver of its medium-term outlook.

AI Strategy and Big Bets

A central theme of Intuit Inc.’s Investor Day was the company’s effort to evolve from a provider of financial software tools into an AI-powered platform capable of completing more work on behalf of customers.

Intuit is combining AI agents with its proprietary financial data and domain-specific AI models to automate tasks across its ecosystem. The company also aims to become the “center of money,” allowing consumers and businesses to manage, move, and grow their finances through its platform.

Another strategic priority is expanding Intuit’s position among mid-market businesses and accounting firms, areas that could provide additional avenues for customer and revenue growth. The company’s strategic growth initiatives, known as Big Bets, grew 34% in fiscal 2026.

AI Creates Both Opportunities and Risks

Despite Intuit Inc.’s AI ambitions, the company faces a key challenge: its overall growth rate is expected to slow materially.

Intuit expects fiscal 2027 revenue growth of 9% to 10%, compared with the 14% growth it delivered in fiscal 2026. UBS said the Investor Day was not particularly sentiment-changing, with stronger investor confidence likely dependent on consistent execution against Intuit’s targets. While Intuit continues to invest heavily in AI and its Big Bets, the company must demonstrate that these investments can offset slower growth in established businesses.

Intuit’s AI strategy could create new opportunities by automating increasingly complex financial tasks and improving the value of its platform. However, the same technological shift could also disrupt the company’s traditional business model.

Generative AI and agentic AI could enable consumers and businesses to complete tax preparation, bookkeeping, accounting, and other financial tasks outside traditional software platforms. If competing AI-powered products offer comparable functionality at lower prices, Intuit could face pressure on customer growth, pricing, and retention.

The company also competes with established software providers and emerging startups offering tax, accounting, payments, and financial-management products, including some services available at free or relatively low prices.

Hedge Fund Positioning and Short Interest

Institutional positioning in Intuit improved during the first half of the year, according to Insider Monkey’s database. The number of hedge funds holding stakes in Intuit Inc. increased from 92 in the first quarter to 98 in the second quarter.

Arrowstreet Capital increased its Intuit position by 15% to approximately $1.17 billion, while Eagle Capital Management increased its stake by 29% to approximately $776.18 million.

Short interest also declined. Shares sold short fell from 12.14 million as of July 31 to approximately 7.9 million as of August 31, representing short interest of about 2.98% of the public float.

The Verdict

Intuit Inc. has reaffirmed its financial targets and is attempting to use proprietary financial data, AI agents, and domain-specific models to expand beyond traditional financial software.

However, the key issue for investors is whether the newer growth initiatives can offset slowing growth in Intuit’s established businesses. Fiscal 2027 revenue growth of 9% to 10% would represent a meaningful deceleration from fiscal 2026, while TurboTax growth is expected to slow further.

The company’s ability to translate its AI investments and Big Bets into sustained customer growth and higher revenue will therefore remain an important factor in determining whether Intuit can maintain its longer-term growth trajectory. For now, these initiatives appear capable of offsetting some, but not all, of the slowdown.
