Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:META) is expanding the commercial capabilities of its Muse AI assistant through a strategic partnership with Shopify, giving investors another potential avenue for AI monetization beyond digital advertising.
On September 21,Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke announced a partnership with Meta to bring Shop Pay agentic checkout to Muse, allowing users to shop from Shopify merchants and complete purchases through the AI assistant. The partnership gives Muse a more direct role in the shopping journey, putting Meta closer to the transaction layer of online commerce rather than simply directing users to third-party websites.

Meta Expands Muse Into AI-Powered Commerce
The Shopify Inc. (NASDAQ:SHOP) integration allows Muse to interact with Shopify stores and complete purchases on behalf of users through agentic checkout. Shopify’s agentic storefronts will also make products more discoverable through AI-driven channels.
The move broadens Muse’s commerce capabilities by giving the agent access to Shopify’s merchant ecosystem and checkout infrastructure. Instead of simply answering questions or generating information, the AI assistant can increasingly perform tasks for users, including product discovery and transactions.
The partnership is particularly notable following Amazon’s decision to block Muse from its e-commerce platform. Amazon said it had not authorized Muse to access its retail platform and argued that third-party AI agents should operate transparently and respect a service provider’s decision about whether to participate.

Shopify’s integration therefore provides Meta Platforms, Inc. with an important commerce channel as it attempts to establish Muse as a broader digital assistant.
Shopify Deal Could Strengthen Meta’s AI Monetization Strategy
Meta has invested heavily in artificial intelligence, including the development of AI assistants and agentic capabilities. The Shopify Inc. partnership could create another potential monetization channel as technology companies increasingly explore AI agents capable of completing tasks rather than simply responding to prompts.
Commerce could eventually provide Meta Platforms, Inc. with opportunities to generate revenue outside its core advertising business. If users increasingly rely on Muse to discover products and complete transactions, Meta could potentially benefit from commercial relationships associated with those purchases.
However, the Shopify agreement does not yet demonstrate that Muse will become a meaningful source of revenue.
The financial terms of the partnership and Meta’s potential revenue share have not been disclosed. It also remains unclear how frequently Muse users will complete purchases through the platform or whether commerce activity will translate into material revenue for Meta.
Muse Still Faces Adoption and Monetization Risks
The partnership strengthens Muse’s commerce capabilities, but turning user interest into recurring revenue remains unproven.
Muse has attracted significant attention as Meta Platforms, Inc. expands its AI assistant strategy. However, downloads, engagement and user interest do not necessarily translate into sustained commerce activity or subscription revenue.
Hedge Fund Positioning
Insider Monkey’s database indicates that hedge fund ownership of Meta stock declined to 254 funds in the second quarter from 262 in the first quarter.
Newlands Management Operations LLC reduced its Meta position by 2% to $5.44 billion, while Fisher Asset Management increased its stake by 2% to $3.83 billion.
Meanwhile, the number of Meta shares held short increased to 30.99 million as of September 15 from 28.05 million shares as of August 14. Short interest represented about 1.22% of the company’s shares.
The Investment Case
The Shopify partnership provides Meta with a new potential pathway to monetize Muse by connecting AI-driven product discovery with actual transactions.
The bullish case rests on Muse becoming an increasingly important interface between consumers and online merchants. If Meta Platforms, Inc. can scale usage and establish a meaningful role in AI-powered commerce, the platform could eventually create monetization opportunities beyond advertising.
The bear case is that the partnership may generate substantial user engagement without producing significant financial returns. Undisclosed economics, uncertain adoption and restrictions from major e-commerce platforms could limit the commercial impact of Muse.
For now, the Shopify Inc. deal represents a meaningful expansion of Muse’s capabilities, but its financial contribution to Meta remains difficult to quantify.
The Bottom Line
The Shopify Inc. partnership strengthens Meta’s push to turn Muse from a conversational AI assistant into an agent capable of completing real-world transactions. The integration provides access to Shopify’s merchant ecosystem and gives Muse a clearer path into AI-powered commerce.
However, the financial terms, revenue-sharing structure and long-term user adoption remain uncertain. As a result, the partnership is an important development for Meta’s AI strategy, but its eventual contribution to earnings will depend on whether Muse can convert growing usage into sustained commercial activity.
