Apple (AAPL)’s Premium iPhone Strategy Faces a Test Beyond Early Adopters

Apple's new foldable iPhone Duo launches with a $1,999 starting price, but analysts at the Cupertino event question its appeal beyond wealthy enthusiasts. Apple showed Zoom, Slack, and Netflix on the expanded display without clearly stating who the target buyer is meant to be.

On September 11, 2026, Reuters reported that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s new foldable iPhone Duo launched with impressive features and a premium starting price of $1,999. However, analysts in the room at the Cupertino launch event questioned its appeal beyond wealthy tech enthusiasts, noting Apple demonstrated the device running Zoom, Slack, and Netflix on its expanded display without clearly articulating who the target buyer is meant to be. Creative Strategies analyst Carolina Milanesi observed that “Apple doesn’t usually define who the buyer is, but in this case specifically, they really shied away from it.”

Bull Case

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s brand strength and pent-up demand could help strong early sales even without a sharply defined target customer. Counterpoint Research estimates that Apple could sell close to 6 million iPhone Duo units by year-end as existing iPhone users drive initial demand. That volume would give Apple roughly one-quarter of the global foldable market almost immediately. TECHnalysis Research expects the Duo to attract attention as a status product. Strong early use could give Apple a real position in foldables before it fully develops the category’s long-term use case.

Apple is positioning the larger foldable display around productivity, entertainment and artificial intelligence rather than treating the Duo as simply another premium iPhone. CEO John Ternus said the larger display could turn the device into a personal AI hub. Apple demonstrated Zoom, Slack, Netflix and content-creation applications during the launch. If consumers embrace those use cases, Apple could give users a stronger reason to pay $1,999 for the device and create a new premium upgrade path within the iPhone ecosystem.

Apple’s entry could also speed up growth across the broader foldable smartphone category. Omdia forecasts 22.3 million global foldable shipments in 2026. It expects Apple’s launch to produce the category’s largest year-over-year shipment increase since 2021. That forecast suggests Apple can attract consumers who previously ignored foldables rather than simply take customers from Samsung, Huawei and Google, giving the Duo room to create incremental hardware demand.

Bear Case

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has not clearly defined who should buy the iPhone Duo, creating a positioning risk for a device that starts at $1,999. Counterpoint Research’s Neil Shah said Apple showed a “lapse in positioning,” and Creative Strategies analyst Carolina Milanesi said Apple avoided clearly identifying the buyer. Apple may make strong launch demand from enthusiasts. But management still needs to convince the audience that the foldable format offers enough utility to justify such a large premium.

The foldable category remains too small to materially reshape the smartphone market in the near term. IDC expects foldables to account for less than 3% of global smartphone shipments in 2026 and does not expect that share to change significantly in 2027, even after Apple enters the market. That limited category size could restrict the Duo’s contribution to Apple’s overall iPhone revenue even if the company quickly captures a real share of foldable sales.

Apple also enters a market where Samsung already holds a significant competitive advantage. Samsung has sold foldable phones since 2019 and currently controls about 40% of the global foldable market, according to Counterpoint. Samsung has already worked through early durability problems and recently redesigned its foldable lineup. Huawei and Google also compete in the category. So Apple needs the Duo to differentiate itself beyond brand appeal after the initial launch excitement fades.

Hedge Fund Sentiment

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s hedge fund count was nearly unchanged at 169 funds in the second quarter versus 170 in the first, with position value climbing to $124.80 billion from $107.48 billion, according to Insider Monkey’s database. Alphabet, developing its own AI ecosystem that Apple’s new Siri reportedly partners with in part, saw stronger growth, with holders rising to 275 from 265 and position value jumping to $93.74 billion from $72.41 billion.

Conclusion

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) can make early demand for the iPhone Duo through brand loyalty, pent-up interest, and a new foldable form factor that expands the iPhone’s productivity and AI capabilities. Counterpoint’s estimate of nearly 6 million units and roughly one-quarter of the global foldable market shows that Apple could establish a position quickly.

Nonetheless, the $1,999 starting price, unclear target audience, and small size of the overall foldable market create significant limits on the product’s near-term impact. Apple needs to prove that the Duo offers enough everyday utility to move beyond wealthy early adopters and develop into a durable new growth category for the iPhone franchise.
