Apple First computer: Working Example of Apple’s First Computer Sold

Apple First computer: Do you remember the days when the Apple I computer was all the rage? Probably not. It has been more than 35 years since this computer was “regularly” used. That being said, with the popularity of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) continuing to grow, this model finds itself in the news once again.

Before we discuss the most recent sale by German auction house Team Breker, let’s take a closer look at a similar transaction organized by Sotheby’s in June 2012. At that auction, a working example of the 1976 Apple I motherboard was sold for a price of $374,500. While this was a record at the time, the most recent sale was more impressive at $640,000. The transaction was completed by Team Breker, though specific buyer/seller info is not available (per Classic Computing).

As Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) continues to flex its muscle in the consumer market, many collectors over the world are interested in purchasing products from the “early years.”

Lonnie Mimms, one of the most well known Apple collectors, was recently interviewed by the team at Classic Computing.

Here is what he had to say about the popularity of these older Apple computers:

“The Apple 1, because of Apple’s status now in the world, is the beginning of that company. For corporate America and for the computer industry, there isn’t anything more iconic than that in existence.”

Do you dream of owning an Apple I computer? If so, you are not alone. However, getting your hands on one of these devices – especially one that works – will be extremely difficult, not to mention expensive.

As noted by AppleInsider, It is estimated that only 200 of these units were made, with each one hand-built by Steve Wozniak. Of the 50 that are known to be intact, it is believed that only six are in working condition.

To see just how far Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has come in terms of pricing, consider this: when the Apple I was released in 1976, it had a selling price of $666.66 (via AppleInsider). This did not include the keyboard, display, power supply, or housing. With this in mind, you may have a newfound respect for the current pricing structure of Apple computers.
