Will This Help Google Inc (GOOG) In The Auto Industry?

When it comes to self driving vehicles, Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) is one of many companies spending a lot of time, money, and resources developing ideas for the future (see this interesting story for more).

Larry PageDespite the fact that the search engine giant, as well as many other companies, have made progress in this industry, it is still going to be a little while before these types of vehicles hit the roadways. That being said, things are definitely moving in the right direction.

Digital Spy recently published a piece discussing the testing of such vehicles in the UK. This is good news for Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG), as the company is hoping to spread the word about this type of technology and what it can do for the future.

Here is what is going on right now:

“Driverless cars will be tested on Britain’s roads before the end of the year. The government has confirmed that the autonomous vehicles will be driven on lightly-used rural and suburban roads with a back-up driver on board as a precautionary measure.

The project is part of a £28 billion Department for Transport scheme to reduce congestion on British roads.

Blueprints for the initiative indicate that the vehicles are capable of driving unassisted based on stored data about the surrounding area, but note that they will be traveling in “semi-autonomous” mode during the trial, giving the passenger the option to intervene.”

While Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) continues to do its thing in the United States, the UK has their own testing going on. One of the most interesting facts from this story is that the project is part of a very large Department for Transport scheme that is aimed at reducing congestion on the roadways.

A team of researchers from Oxford University are in charge of the project. This team has already carried out tests with a self-driving Nissan Leaf in the area. In other words, they know exactly what they are doing.

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) has been involved with this type of technology for quite a few years, and there is no reason to believe the search company is going to change its direction in the near future.

It is nice to see driverless technology becoming more and more important all over the world, not just at Google headquarters. This will help move things forward in a faster and more efficient manner.
