BERKSHIRE HATHAWAYBuffett Calls Allentown ‘Our Kind of Place’ tp Buy Paper (BusinessWeek)
Warren Buffett, the billionaire chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE:BRK.A), told the Allentown Morning Call that the Pennsylvania community is “our kind of place” for investing in a newspaper. Buffett, who has spent more than $340 million on 80 newspapers, was asked by the publication if he would consider purchasing it. Don’t be a wannabe Warren (InvestorsChronicle)
Thousands of these ‘average investors’ continue to buy into the Buffett dream, though, despite warnings like this from Cullen Roche, who writes for the influential US blog Pragmatic Capital. There are hundreds of websites and books that will tell you the exact opposite, including no fewer than 1,800 on Amazon referencing the veteran investor. Buffett to ‘Hypocrisy’ Critics: Stock Purchase Not Timed to Avoid Taxes (CNBC)
Warren Buffett has responded to critics who said the timing of Berkshire Hathaway’s purchase of $1.2 billion of its own stock was designed to save the seller a lot of money in taxes. That’s based on the assumption the seller expects the tax rate on capital gains will be substantially higher next year after the “fiscal cliff” is resolved, so he or she wanted to complete the sale before the end of this year.
