This Carrier Doesn’t Care About Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPhone

In today’s day and age, it is hard to believe that any wireless carrier in any country would turn its cheek to the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone. After all, this smartphone has become known as one of the most popular in the world. We have talked about its popularity in the past, and although Cupertino has faced a rough patch as of late things are turning around.

As you know, the Apple iPhone is more popular in some countries than others. One of the main reasons for the lack of popularity in particular regions is a lack of availability. In other words, there are not enough carriers offering the device.

This is going on in Japan right now, with the largest wireless carrier, DoCoMo, not currently offering the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone. While this may sound like suicide for the company, it is doing quite well despite the fact that it has no relationship with Cupertino.

In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, DoCoMo Senior Executive Vice President Kazuto Tsubouchi answered some questions about the future of his company and why it has yet to get on board with Apple.

When asked if it is necessary for his company to carry the iPhone in the future, you may be surprised at the answer:

“The iPhone is surely an attractive product to have in any handset lineup. Some of our customers want the iPhone and are asking when we will start carrying it. We do take that into consideration.

But at the same time, it’s not that DoCoMo won’t be able to survive without the iPhone. I don’t think it is indispensable for us to sell the iPhone.”

As you can see, DoCoMo is not putting all its eggs in one basket. The carrier is at least considering adding the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone to its lineup, but is also aware that this is not something that will make or break the company. Instead, Tsubouchi feels the company will be just fine moving forward without the power of the iPhone at its back.

In the months to come, it will be interesting to see if Tsubouchi changes his tune. Along with this, it is always a good idea to pay attention to the other side of the argument. Is there any chance Apple will begin to push for a deal with DoCoMo?
