The Unemployment Rate Is Up In 9 States Y/Y

In July, 28 states and the District of Columbia had unemployment rate increases, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports. Of the remaining states, 8 had unemployment rate decreases and 14 had no change.

From a year ago, 36 states and D.C. have had unemployment rate decreases, 9 states have had increases, and 5 states have had no change.

Recall that the national unemployment rate in July was 7.4% as reported earlier this month by the BLS in its employment situation release.

Puerto Rico continues to hold the highest unemployment rate which increased to 13.5% last month and is followed by Nevada at 9.5%. The lowest is in North Dakota at 3.0% and South Dakota at 3.9%.

The state with the greatest change in July was Mississippi, where the unemployment rate somehow declined a whole 0.5% down to 8.5%.
