Tether Blocks $213M Funds Connected to Gurhan Kiziloz Over Alleged Gambling Tax Disputes & Token Sales

Tether has blocked $213 million in cryptocurrency assets connected to Gurhan Kiziloz following Brazilian government action targeting gambling tax disputes and alleged unregistered token sales.

The freeze covers the period from 2021 to 2024, during which authorities say Kiziloz operated gambling platforms while disputing tax obligations. Brazilian regulators have also flagged cryptocurrency token offerings connected to Kiziloz.

The $213 million is spread across multiple digital wallets, suggesting efforts to distribute holdings beyond single accounts. Tether, which operates the world’s largest stablecoin by market value, complied with the freeze request following coordination with Brazilian authorities.

This is not Tether’s first significant enforcement action. The company froze $180 million in separate cases earlier this year and has blocked more than $3 billion in assets since launching its compliance program. The frequency of such freezes has raised questions about the practical limits of cryptocurrency’s purported decentralization.

Kiziloz’s gaming operations processed significant transaction volumes during the disputed period. Brazilian authorities contend the platforms operated while tax obligations remained unresolved and that associated cryptocurrency sales violated financial regulations.

The case highlights the tension between cryptocurrency’s promise of financial autonomy and the reality of government enforcement. Despite being designed to operate beyond traditional financial controls, stablecoins like Tether ultimately depend on centralized issuers that can, and do, comply with legal orders to freeze assets.

The $213 million remains frozen pending resolution of the underlying disputes with Brazilian regulators. No criminal charges have been filed, and the action remains classified as a civil enforcement matter, though the scale of the freeze and the allegations involved suggest authorities view the case seriously.

Attempts to reach Kiziloz for comment were unsuccessful. The inability to obtain his response leaves open questions about his defense against the allegations.
