Snapchat Unveils Standalone App for Making GenAI AR effects

On June 4, Snap Inc. (NYSE:SNAP) officially launched new and more accessible versions of its Lens Studio: a standalone iOS app and a web tool. These additions are designed to democratize the creation of augmented reality/AR Lenses, which allows users of all skill levels to design custom AR effects using text prompts and simple editing tools, rather than requiring professional development expertise.

The new Lens Studio app enables users to generate their own AI effects, integrate their Bitmoji, and explore trending templates to customize Lenses. While the desktop application of Lens Studio will remain the primary tool for Snap’s existing ecosystem of over 400,000 professional AR developers and teams, these new tools are aimed at a broader audience. Snap’s blog post highlighted the ease of use, stating that ‘now, you can generate your own AI effects, add your dancing Bitmoji to the fun, and express yourself with Lenses that reflect your mood or an inside joke.’

Snap has been a leader in the AR space due to its early adoption and consistent investment in AR filters and Lenses. This latest move signals a doubling down on its AR vision, especially as competitors like Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META) have scaled back their AR creation platforms, such as the shutdown of Spark AR last year. In addition to these simpler tools for a wider audience, Snap also rolled out advanced tools for professional AR creators and developers on June 3. These new Lens Studio tools facilitate the creation of Bitmoji games.

Snap Inc. (NYSE:SNAP) is a global technology company that offers Snapchat, which is a visual messaging application with various tabs, such as camera, visual messaging, snap map, stories, and spotlight. It enables people to communicate visually through short videos and images.
