Apple Success Factors: Should Apple Rely Less on the iPhone, More on Other Products?

Apple Success Factors: While there is no denying the success of the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone, many are beginning to wonder if the company is relying too heavily on this one device.

In a recent segment on Bloomberg TV, Bloomberg Television markets reporter Jon Erlichman speaks on this subject.

The interview gets started with the host asking Erlichman if the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone has finally slowed down and if people are done upgrading. Here is what he had to say:

“I think that is one of the big questions people will be asking the CEO Tim Cook tonight. This is the biggest revenue generator for Apple and I think it is fair to say that over the last five years, in any product category, this has been one of the most successful products on the planet.”

Erlichman goes on to discuss more about Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) sales for the past quarter:

“What we like to do at Bloomberg is call up the fancy Wall Street analysts and ask them how many phones they think Apple is going to sell, and the average of that, of all the analysts we’ve spoken to, is that Apple likely sold in the last three months 48  million of the iPhones. That is an amazing number, it would be a record number for them, but to your point the question is whether they can maintain that sales growth coming into the fresh new year.”

The host then goes on to ask Erlichman to speak about Tim Cook and his current view on the Apple investor story. Here is his response:

“Everybody directly or indirectly likely has a stake in Apple. There is a real difference in Steve Jobs and Tim Cook that could be measured through the stock price. I mean, a lot of people who have watched Apple for a lot of years know that Steve Jobs wasn’t always on the company’s quarterly conference calls, addressing the analysts and talking about Apple as an investment. Tim Cook is actually a guy who has been doing that for a long time. He’s a guy for a long time who has actually met with investors. And a guy who has done some investment friendly things, like issuing a dividend, something people wonder if Steve Jobs would have done.”

Erlichman leaves the interview by sharing one last key point:

“Is Apple going to be a company that lets its products speak for itself, or if they think there is a trend changing in the number of iPhones they can sell, whether they need to do a lot more of those investor friendly things?”
