This initiative is part of the league’s broader effort to boost fan engagement and grow its audience. Co-founded in 2018 by tech billionaire Larry Ellison and sailing champion Russell Coutts, SailGP features 12 co-ed international teams competing in identical 50-foot catamarans that can reach speeds over 60 mph.

SailGP chief revenue officer Ben Johnson made the following comment:

“It’s a sport that’s naturally built for sports betting and gaming onsite in person at the events. It’s communal; it’s high speed; there are lots of different winners, event-to-event.”

He further said:

“It is really reflective of how good the teams are currently and how much competition there is on a race-to-race basis, which makes it really fun for fans from a betting and gaming perspective. You can have an odds favorite, but at the end of the day, it really depends which team is sailing most competitively that weekend in that venue.”

The races are held close to shore, with temporary stadiums set up for fans and cameras to capture the action up close. SailGP already earns revenue from ticket sales, sponsorships, and media rights.
