On Thursday, RTX Corporation (NYSE:RTX)’s Raytheon business and Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) announced the completion of four successful tests of flight-ready Highly Loaded Grain (HLG) rocket motors for the U.S. Army’s Next-Generation Short-Range Interceptor (NGSRI).

The HLG solid propellant technology provides longer burn times and enables increased energy output compared to conventional solid rocket motors, which extends the range of RTX Corporation (NYSE:RTX)’s interceptor offering compared to other missiles.

The NGSRI is the American military’s new short-range missile that is not only faster but also more efficient against aerial targets than existing interceptors. It can be fired from a tripod, shoulder launcher, or vehicle.

RTX Corporation (NYSE:RTX) and Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) conducted three static firings in varying conditions and followed it up with a ballistic flight demonstration during the latest round of testing. Additional flight tests are planned over the coming months.

Tom Laliberty, President of Land and Air Defense Systems at Raytheon, stated the following on the development:

“These tests demonstrate our ability to rapidly develop this transformational air defense capability, which can defeat a variety of airborne threats at far greater ranges than legacy systems. Alongside Northrop Grumman, Raytheon is delivering cutting-edge technology to protect our warfighters.”

Frank DeMauro, VP and GM, Weapon Systems at Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) was delighted at the project moving from concept to first flight in a record time. He had the following to say:

“Northrop Grumman continues to push the boundaries on next-generation propulsion technology, and we’re excited to work with Raytheon to bring this advanced solution for warfighters at record pace. Developed and demonstrated in five months, this innovative HLG motor provides increased speed, range, effectiveness and mission flexibility in a very small package.”
