Mondelez International, Inc. (MDLZ) Sues Aldi, Alleging the Supermarket Chain Copies Its Packaging

Mondelez International, Inc. (NASDAQ:MDLZ) is suing Aldi, alleging that the supermarket chain’s cookies and crackers packaging ‘blatantly copies’ Mondelez products.

Aldi has not yet responded to media queries on the matter. Its U.S. branch in Batavia, Illinois, was named in the lawsuit. Founded in Germany, Aldi is one of the fastest-growing grocery chains in the U.S., with over 2,500 stores across 39 states.

In a federal lawsuit filed this week, Mondelez International, Inc. (NASDAQ:MDLZ) stated that the packaging was likely to deceive and confuse customers, potentially harming its brands. The company is seeking monetary damages and for the court to bar Aldi from selling products that infringe on its trademarks, the Associated Press reported on Friday.

Mondelez International, Inc. (NASDAQ:MDLZ) displayed several photos in the lawsuit, alleging that Aldi infringed on its trade dress rights for the packaging of multiple products. The company also said that it contacted Aldi on numerous occasions about “confusingly similar packaging.” While Aldi discontinued or changed the packaging on some products, it continued to sell others, said Mondelez.
