TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ:TIVO) remains a small company with a base of subscribers in the single-digit millions. Last quarter, it added just 212,000 subscribers. A TiVo spokesman told me the Roamio could add several hundred thousand more subscribers in the near-term, but that’s still a drop in the bucket compared to the millions of Xbox Ones Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is hoping to move.

Still, Xbox One offers far more features than the Roamio, and TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ:TIVO) lacks Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s advertising budget. If there’s a group of consumers willing to shell out for the Roamio, then there’s obviously some consumers out there who will buy the next Xbox for nothing more than its TV capabilities.

Consoles aren’t just for video games anymore
If nothing else, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s new ad is proof of an emerging trend: video game consoles aren’t just for gamers anymore. By focusing on its non-gaming capabilities, Microsoft has targeted the Xbox One at the general, non-gaming public.

In the end, that could result in significant sales, as there are far more non-gamers than there are gamers.
