Jim Cramer Names Amazon (AMZN) a “Sleep-at-Night Growth Stock”

On September 8, continuing his portfolio review of high-growth equities through an NFL lens, Mad Money host Jim Cramer turned his attention to e-commerce and cloud giant Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN). Comparing the tech titan to Seattle Seahawks star receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, he said:

Next, for a less risky wide receiver, how about Amazon? Their Amazon Web Services business is on fire. The stock’s gotten pretty cheap here. It’s trading at 20 times this year’s earnings estimates; not many times I remember having it that low. We’re going to stay in Seattle for the Amazon analog: Seahawks receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba who had a breakout season last year and earned NFL offensive player of the year. He might not have the absolute upside, but I think he’s more dependable than other top flight options. Call Amazon a sleep at night growth stock. Jaxon offers the same thing for your fantasy team. I love that kid.

A Dominant Cloud Engine and Reasonable Valuation

Cramer’s bullish thesis centers on a powerful combination of reaccelerating cloud momentum and an unusually modest valuation multiple. Amazon.com, Inc.’s financial performance validates the strength of its core operations, highlighted by record Q2 2026 total revenue of $200.6 billion, representing a 20% year-over-year increase.

The standout performer remains Amazon Web Services (AWS), which saw revenue surge 37% year-over-year to $42.2 billion, marking its fastest growth rate in 18 quarters. Driven by enterprise artificial intelligence adoption and strong core cloud migration, AWS operating income reached $16.6 billion. At the same time, the stock trades at an attractive price-to-earnings multiple of roughly 20x, presenting a historically compressed valuation for a mega-cap growth leader.

Heavy Capital Outlays and Margin Pressures

Even as a dependable large-cap giant, Amazon.com, Inc. could face some operational and macroeconomic headwinds. Massive capital expenditure directed toward artificial intelligence infrastructure have pushed trailing-12-month free cash flow into negative territory. Furthermore, retail margin pressures, consumer spending shifts, and inflationary costs for hardware components require continuous operational discipline, leaving little room for execution errors if demand softens.

Hedge Fund Popularity and Short Interest Trends

According to Insider Monkey’s database of over 1000 hedge funds, 369 of them held a stake in Amazon.com, Inc. during Q2, compared to 353 in the prior quarter, making it the single most widely held stock across our tracking database. The short interest sits at a minimal 0.97% of float, highlighting strong confidence from professional managers and limited bearish positioning.

Amazon.com, Inc. bridges the gap between tech growth and institutional stability. For investors seeking reliable execution, strong operating cash generation, and leading cloud market positioning without extreme valuation risk, the company earns its designation as an elite portfolio wide receiver.
