ISIS Has Up To 70,000 Twitter Inc (TWTR) Accounts, Says New Study

Though companies such as Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) continually work with authorities to curtail the spread of content backed by groups like the Islamic State (ISIS), there continues to be more of this type of material proliferating on the internet.

This shouldn’t be a shock, however, in light of a new study cited by the New York Post that says ISIS and supporters of the group may have controlled more than 46,000 Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) accounts from September to December of last year.

ISIS “has exploited social media, most notoriously Twitter, to send its propaganda and messaging out to the world and to draw in people vulnerable to radicalization,” wrote J.M. Berger and Jonathan Morgan in the study.

The study (PDF) comes from the think tank Brookings Institute which estimated in the study that over 46,000 accounts were linked to ISIS and supporters of the group during the last four months of 2014. However, Brookings Institute also pointed out that not all of the accounts were active at the same time.

Nevertheless, another assertion from the study that stands out is that the research estimates 46,000 to be a conservative number of Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) accounts so there may very well be more accounts directly controlled by ISIS or its supporters. Berger and Morgan said that their estimate’s maximum is at 70,000.

Twitter, ISIS, Islamic State, is TWTR a good stock to buy, J.M. Berger, Jonathan Morgan, Brookings Institute,

Berger and Morgan said, nonetheless, that they believe the correct figure to be closer to the lower end of their estimate.

According to the study’s authors, ISIS is using accounts Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) and other social media sites to attract new recruits and inspire lone actor attacks.

Ken Griffin’s Citadel Capital Management owned about 2.73 million shares Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) by the end of the last quarter of 2014.
