Grocery Outlet Holding Corp. (GO): Among Small-Cap Stocks Insiders Were Buying in Q1 2025

Ingles Markets, a regional grocery chain with a $1.1 billion market cap, operates 198 stores across the Southeastern U.S., with its hub in Ashville, North Carolina. The company suffered a significant setback in the wake of Hurricane Helene, which heavily impacted its headquarters and distribution infrastructure, temporarily shuttering key locations and disrupting operations at its Milkco subsidiary due to water service issues.

Despite the storm’s effects, Ingles retains several distinct strategic advantages over typical regional grocers. Its vertically integrated model includes ownership of its warehousing, distribution, and transportation systems, as well as Milkco, a milk processing and packaging subsidiary that not only supports internal operations but also generates third-party revenue.

Additionally, Ingles’s real estate strategy stands out—owning 175 of its store locations, many as anchor tenants in shopping centers it controls, and holding 29 undeveloped sites. This ownership structure enhances income stability and positions the company favorably in the growing Southeast, where land values are rising.

The company is also characterized by strong family control, with Chairman Robert Ingle II holding 72.5% of voting power, fostering long-term orientation but potentially hindering adaptability. Despite lacking quarterly calls or analyst coverage, Ingles continues to generate stable cash flows, creating a value opportunity for investors willing to navigate its opacity.

While its stock has lagged peers since 2023, the embedded value in its real estate and conservative capital structure could appeal to patient, value-driven investors. The central question remains whether its grocery business remains competitive enough to support this underlying value, as monetization of real estate alone is an unlikely catalyst.

Previously, we covered a bullish thesis on Ingles Markets (IMKTA) by Peter Thomason in May 2025, highlighting its overlooked real estate value, vertically integrated operations, and owner-operator discipline. The thesis by Todd Wenning reinforces this by showcasing Ingles’ real estate-heavy model, Milkco subsidiary, and Southeast focus, while acknowledging hurricane-related disruption and lack of analyst coverage. Both argue IMKTA’s opaque but asset-rich model presents rare value, despite near-term operational and visibility challenges.
