Hut 8 Corp. (HUT)’s AI Pivot Gets a Major Boost From the $35 Billion Anthropic Deal

Hut 8 Corp. (NASDAQ:HUT) is increasingly positioning itself as an AI infrastructure company rather than simply a Bitcoin miner, opening up potentially significant new growth opportunities as demand for power and data-center capacity accelerates.

The company’s strategy is shifting away from relying primarily on Bitcoin economics and toward monetizing its power portfolio and data-center infrastructure through long-term artificial intelligence contracts.

Hut 8 Expands Its AI Infrastructure Strategy

On September 1, Hut 8 Corp. confirmed it is developing a data center in Nueces County, Texas, to be leased by Nvidia as part of a $35 billion computing agreement with Anthropic.

The latest development follows Hut 8’s first major AI infrastructure transaction announced late last year: a 15-year, $7 billion lease agreement with Fluidstack covering approximately 245 megawatts of capacity. Google is providing financial backing for the agreement.

Hut 8 has also inked a 15-year, $9.8 billion lease covering 352 megawatts of AI factory capacity at its Beacon Point campus in Nueces County, Texas.

Taken together, these agreements demonstrate how Hut 8 is attempting to capitalize on its ability to secure power and develop large-scale, energy-intensive infrastructure.

Long-Term AI Contracts Could Improve Revenue Visibility

One of the most important aspects of Hut 8’s strategy is the duration of its AI infrastructure agreements. Long-term leases and take-or-pay structures can provide greater revenue visibility than the company’s traditional Bitcoin-mining operations, whose economics are heavily influenced by cryptocurrency prices, network difficulty and energy costs.

The structure can also potentially improve Hut 8’s ability to finance additional development. Once the company secures a long-term, investment-grade tenant, contracted cash flows can potentially be used to support project-level debt financing.

Financing Gives Hut 8 More Capacity to Build

Hut 8 Corp. had $7.5 billion in fully amortizing, investment-grade project financing as of the end of the second quarter. The company secured the financing through two separate offerings to fund construction at the River Bend and Beacon Point AI data center campuses.

Project-level financing therefore allows Hut 8 to expand its infrastructure footprint while limiting the amount of capital that must come directly from its balance sheet.

Hut 8 Still Faces Significant Execution Risks

Developing large-scale AI campuses is capital-intensive and subject to construction delays, power-delivery problems, permitting issues, and cost overruns. Any delay could push revenue generation further into the future while Hut 8 continues to incur construction and financing costs.

Hut 8 is also subject to counterparty risks given that a significant portion of its future data center revenue comes from a relatively small number of customers. Losing or renegotiating with a major customer can negatively impact expected revenue.

Amid the AI pivot, Bitcoin exposure has not disappeared. Consequently, heightened volatility in the crypto markets can materially affect the company’s financial condition.

Hedge Fund Analysis

According to the Insider Monkey Database, 73 hedge funds held stakes in Hut 8 stock as of the end of the second quarter, up from 60 hedge funds at the end of the first quarter of 2026. As of August 14, short interest in the stock stood at 11.96% of the float, with 13.94 million shares sold short. The significant short interest suggests investors are betting against the stock, given concerns around Bitcoin, valuation, and the execution of the AI/data center strategy.

Investment Takeaway

Hut 8 Corp.’s transformation from a Bitcoin miner to a power-focused AI infrastructure developer is central to the investment thesis. Its long-term AI leases, access to project financing, and strategic positioning in Texas enable the company to capitalize on the rapidly expanding demand for AI data center capacity.

However, investors should not overlook the risks. Hut 8 must successfully execute large and capital-intensive projects, maintain relationships with major customers, and demonstrate that its AI infrastructure investments can generate attractive returns.
