Many factors can cause your QuickBooks application to stop operating, get stuck, freeze, or stop responding. You may encounter such issues while launching the application, generating or accessing a large report, or restoring a company file. It can happen due to several reasons, like corruption in the data file, configuration files, or the QBWUSER.INI file. Why your QuickBooks has Stopped Working?
You may face the QuickBooks has stopped working issue due to:
- Missing Windows updates
- Damaged or corrupt QBW file causing instability
- Broken or incomplete program files
- Outdated version of the QuickBooks application
- Name of the company file might contain special characters.
- Insufficient resources, such as low RAM/CPU, leading to the QuickBooks application freezing
- Security software or firewall is blocking QuickBooks processes
- Damaged .ND and .TLG files
- A damaged QBWUSER.INI can cause crashes on startup or when closing QuickBooks

Methods to Resolve QuickBooks has Stopped Working, Frozen, or Won’t Open Issues
If QuickBooks won’t open or may stop responding with the message “QuickBooks needs a subscription”, you can use the Customer Account Management Portal to check your subscription status. If the corruption in program/installation files is behind the issue, then try repairing the QuickBooks application. For this, open Control Panel on your system, click Programs, and then click Programs and Features. It will display the list of installed programs. Search for QuickBooks, right-click it, and then click Repair.
After the repair process is complete, try to open your QuickBooks application. If this workaround fails, then try the following.
Method 1- Rename Damaged .ND and .TLG Files
The .TLG file stores transaction log information, while the .ND file stores network configuration information that helps QuickBooks access the company file in a multi-user environment. If any of these QuickBooks component files get corrupted or damaged, then you may encounter “QuickBooks not responding” issue. This situation usually occurs in a multi-user environment when the application fails to connect to the company file. You can rename these files to recreate them. Here’s how to do so:
- Go to the company file folder on your system.
- Find the .ND file (it has the same name as your QBW file).
- Right-click on it and choose the Rename option.
Repeat the same steps to reset .TLG file.
Method 2 – Close QuickBooks and Related Processes
The “QuickBooks has stopped working” issue can occur when multiple processes related to QuickBooks are running in the background. You can check and close all the processes. To do so, follow these steps:
- Press CTRL+ALT+DEL simultaneously and then select Task Manager.
- Click the Processes tab and search for all processes with the word QuickBooks in the name.
- Find each process, select it, and then click on the End Process option at the bottom right corner of Task Manager.
Method 3 – Rename QBWUSER.INI File
The QBWUSER.INI file stores user preferences and startup information, while the EntitlementDataStore.ecml file stores licensing and entitlement information. The application uses these files to read the user preferences and licensing information after startup. If this file gets corrupted, it can lead to QuickBooks won’t open issue. You can rename this file to resolve the issue. Here’s how:
- Go to the folder where the QBWUSER.ini file is saved:
Users[Your user name]AppDataLocalIntuitQuickBooks [year]
- Right-click the QBWUSER.ini file and select Rename.
- Add .old at the end of the file name (e.g. QBWUSER.ini.old).
- Rename the EntitlementDataStore.ecml file.
- Restart the QuickBooks Desktop application.
Method 4: Run QuickBooks Tool Hub
You can download, install, and launch the latest version of QuickBooks Tool Hub for corrupt or damaged installation and program files. This is an Intuit-recommended open-source tool that you can use to resolve QuickBooks errors. Once launched, use the following tools for program issues:
Quick Fix my Program
This tool will shut down any open background processes QuickBooks uses and run a quick repair on your program. To use it, in the Tool Hub, select Program Problems and click Quick Fix my Program.
QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool
If the above tool fails to start your QuickBooks Desktop, then run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool by following these steps:
- In Tool Hub, click Installation Issues.
- Select QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool
Wait until the tool completes the process and then restart your system. After that, launch your QuickBooks Desktop and check if it opens.
Method 5 – Fix your Company File
Corruption in the data file can also cause your QuickBooks to stop working. To check and confirm this, you can try to open your file using ALT key. If the file crashes or causes an error while holding the ALT key, that means there is an issue with your company file. To troubleshoot this, first you can check the name of the company file. It should not contain special characters. Next, verify and rebuild data in the company file using the built-in tool in QuickBooks. If it fails, then use Tool Hub’s repair tool – File Doctor. Here’s how:
- In the Tool Hub, select the option – Company File Issues.
- Next, click Run QuickBooks File Doctor. It may take a few minutes to open.
- When it opens, click on Browse to select the QBW file you want to repair.
- Select the option – Check your file and then Continue.
- Enter the QuickBooks admin credentials and then click Next.
Now, the tool will start scanning and repairing the corrupted company file. If the size of your file is less than 2GB, it can easily repair it. But it requires your QuickBooks admin credentials.
