Train Derailment at Union Pacific

Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE:UNP) is in the news after one of its trains carrying crude oil derailed around Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge on Friday. The derailment caused a large fire and schools in a nearby town had to be evacuated. The derailment illustrates the dangers of carrying crude through trains rather than through pipeline. Despite the bad news, Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE:UNP) shares are unchanged in the pre-market so far. The number of funds in Union Pacific fell by two quarter-over-quarter to 54 at the end of March.

Senior Executive Leaves Alphabet Unit

The head of Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)’s subsidiary Nest Labs, Tony Fadell, is leaving. Fadell played an important role in developing the iPod and founded Nest Labs. Although Alphabet bought Nest Labs in 2014 for $3.2 billion, the unit has purportedly dealt with several product delays and may not have met Alphabet’s internal revenue expectations in recent quarters. The increased attention to financial metrics may have played a part in Fadell leaving from the spot. However, he will still be an adviser to Alphabet, Inc (NASDAQ GOOG). Andreas Halvorsen’s Viking Global is one of the top shareholders of Alphabet, according to the latest round of 13F filings.
