The new cable will connect Chile with Australia and Asia—it will run from Valparaiso in Chile’s central region to Australia. The project is anticipated to become operational by 2027.

The partnership marks the first agreement of its kind between Google and a country. According to details of the deal, the cable will enhance Chile’s digital connectivity with Asian nations, including Chile’s largest trading partner, China. This initiative is part of Chile’s efforts to grow itself into a regional hub for Latin America.

While the total investment remains undisclosed, Chilean officials previously estimated costs between $300 million and $550 million. The country will contribute $25 million to the project, according to Patricio Rey, general manager of state-owned partner Desarrollo Pais.

The cable will be available for use by other technology firms operating in Chile. Officials expect the infrastructure to improve performance for platforms like TikTok, support astronomical data transmission, and benefit mining operations in both Chile and Australia.

Desarrollo Pais, a state-owned company that is also at the center of the pact, is exploring options to connect the cable to Argentina through a border crossing. Further details of the partnership reveal that the partners are working to identify an operator to commercialize the cable’s capacity.
