Google Map Vs Apple Maps: Google Still Eying Apple Tool

Google Map Vs Apple Maps: Despite the fact that the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) Maps drama is in the past, many people, including Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) Chairman Eric Schmidt, are still thinking about whether or not the two companies have a future together.

There is no denying the fact that Apple and Google are fighting for market share in the smartphone industry. On one side of things, you have Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS. Across the ring is the Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android operating system.

It doesn’t matter which operating system you prefer, you likely also have a preference as to which mapping tool you use.

Schmidt has made it known that he still wants Google Maps to be the default on the Apple iOS operating system. This may come as somewhat of a surprise to some.

Larry Page and Eric Schmidt, Google FoundersAccording to CNET, Schmidt discussed the relationship during an AllThingsD mobile conference. While doing so, he never touched on why Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) decided to move on with its own mapping system as opposed to sticking with what Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) has to offer.

He added that the company is still making a strong push for Apple to change its mind and once again rely on Google Maps as its default mapping tool.

Here is a quote from Schmidt:

“We would still really like them to use our maps. It would be easy for them to take the app in the store and put it as their basic one.”

Easy, yes. That being said, why Apple really consider doing this? Would they go back on its initial move of shunning Google Maps for its own tool? That is the question at this point.

There was a time when Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) had no problem working together. But as noted above, as iOS and Android smartphones began to battle for market share, tensions increased. This is why Apple decided to add its own mapping app with the iPhone 5 as opposed to Google’s  program.

Although Google Inc has an app for iOS, it is Apple’s tool that is the default on the current iPhone.

With Schmidt saying he would once again like to work with Apple in this capacity, it will be interesting to see if either company takes more of an initiative in the near future in regards to making this happen.

Would you like to see Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) once again rely on Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) Maps primarily?

Here’s how the two mapping platforms stacked up in an “Amazing Race”:
