Top Smartphone Platform: Google, Apple, Research In Motion: 1, 2, 3 On This List

Top Smartphone Platform: When you think about the top smartphone platform in the world what comes to mind? Most people think about three companies: Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG), and Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) BlackBerry.

At this point, every one of these companies is competing for the top spot. Every one of these companies wants its operating system to be known as number one. But of course, there is only room for one company at the top of the industry.

According to a recent report by comScore, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCOR), things are looking up for Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), Google, and Research In Motion Ltd. At this time, it appears that all three of these companies are moving in the right direction.

That being said, there is a big difference between moving in the right direction and actually capturing market share from the competition.

Here is what the report had to say about smartphone platform market share:

“Google Android ranked as the top smartphone platform with 52 percent market share (71.1 million subscribers), while Apple’s share increased 2.7 percentage points to 39 percent (53.3 million subscribers). BlackBerry ranked third with 5.2 percent share.”

Google Inc (GOOG)That pretty much says it all. Right now, as expected, Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) is top dog. There are a few reasons for this, most important being the fact that the Android operating system is used by multiple manufacturers including Samsung.

Of course, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is doing what it can to take back market share. With an increase of 2.7 percent over the past three months, the Cupertino based company is pushing forward.

And then you have Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) BlackBerry in third place. While this company was once at the top of the industry, it has slipped quite a bit as of late. However, its 5.2 percent market share shows that the company is at least competing with the rest of the industry.

It is important to note that while Apple gained market share over the past three months, both Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) BlackBerry are dealing with a slight decline.

Although the battle has been going on for quite some time, it is just now beginning to heat up. Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) are one and two, with Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) BlackBerry doing its best to get back into the game no matter what it takes.
