In today’s day and age, it is easy to believe that everybody is using a smartphone for daily communication. This holds true both for personal and business use. Taking this one step further, companies such as Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) are out in front of the industry thanks to their leading mobile operating systems (check out more on this here).

Apple Inc. (AAPL)Despite the fact that it is easy to believe that everybody is using a smartphone in today’s world, this is not exactly true according to a recent report by Asymco.

There is no denying the fact that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) are doing quite well in the smartphone space. These two companies are leaders in markets all over the world, and this will likely hold true into the future.

However, here is what Asymco had to say about the number of smartphone users:

“According to the latest comScore survey data, 98 million Americans above the age of 13 don’t use a smartphone as their primary phone. That’s 41% of US mobile phone users.

What’s more, 2.5 million more people first started using smartphones in the three month period ending May vs. the three month period ending in April.”

As you can see, there is a very large group of people who are not currently using a smartphone in the United States. While these people are using a mobile device, a smartphone is not the one in their pocket.

Even more so, it is interesting to note that roughly 2.5 million people just starting using a smartphone for the first time earlier this year.

Despite the fact that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) are doing well, these companies have a lot of people out there to market to. Who cares about stealing users from one another when there are nearly 100 million Americans who are not currently using a smartphone as their primary phone. This is a huge target market.

Here is more from the piece, discussing a graph published in the story:

“It shows the number of new-to-smartphone users who switched every week. It can be considered the “speed of adoption”. The latest figure is 583k/week, above the 572k/week average maintained over the last 41 months.”

The speed of adoption is on the rise, so Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) should be in position to take advantage in the months and years to come.
