BYD launched in South Africa in 2023 with its battery electric ATTO 3 vehicle and currently operates ~13 dealerships in the country. In April, the company launched its plug-in hybrid Shark pick-up, hybrid SEALION 6, and pure electric SEALION 7 SUV models, completing its hybrid and electric dual-powertrain strategy. According to data from the automotive industry body NAAMSA, sales of NEVs in South Africa increased to 15,611 units in 2024 from 7,782 units in 2023. BYD has already expanded its presence into 16 countries and regions across Africa, including recent entries into Benin, Tunisia, Madagascar, Ethiopia, and Rwanda.
