Old Mutual
Life assurance group Old Mutual plc (LON:OML) is a purer play on Southern Africa, which accounts for 70% of group revenues. It has a 52% shareholding in Johannesburg-listed Nedbank. One of the four largest full-service banks in South Africa, Nedbank has about half the number of branches on the continent as Barclays PLC (ADR) (NYSE:BCS) but is investing to expand selectively.

Nedbank made £0.8 billion of operating profits last year. That’s bigger in absolute terms than either Barclays PLC (ADR) (NYSE:BCS) or StanChart, and about half of Old Mutual plc (LON:OML)’s total operating profit.
