Asana (ASAN) Reached a 10% Non-GAAP Operating Margin. Can Agentic Products Restore Expansion?

Asana, Inc. (NYSE:ASAN) reported fiscal second-quarter 2027 revenue of $216.4 million, up 10% year over year, and company-defined non-GAAP operating income of $21.8 million, equal to a 10.1% margin. The reconciliation from a $41.2 million GAAP operating loss excluded $58.6 million of stock-based compensation-related charges, including stock compensation expense, associated payroll taxes on restricted stock units and amortization of stock compensation capitalized in internal-use software. Asana, Inc. (NYSE:ASAN) separately excluded $2.5 million of restructuring costs, $1.4 million of acquisition-related costs, and $0.5 million of intangible amortization.

The margin improvement shows that Asana, Inc. can produce greater efficiency. The growth test remains unresolved. Overall dollar-based net retention was 97%, while the Core cohort and customers spending at least $100,000 annually were both at 98%.

Bull Case

Asana, Inc. is showing progress in the parts of the business most likely to support durable growth. Core revenue increased 11%, the Core customer count rose 7% to 26,778, and the number of customers spending at least $100,000 annually grew 16% to 890. Retention also improved sequentially across every disclosed cohort.

Cash generation strengthened alongside margins. Operating cash flow reached $46.0 million. Company-defined adjusted free cash flow was $42.3 million, calculated as operating cash flow less purchases of property and equipment and capitalized internal-use software costs, plus restructuring costs paid.

Agentic Work Management is scheduled to launch in the third quarter, bringing AI Teammates, AI Studio, and Asana Dash to every paid tier. Asana, Inc. plans to develop consumption-based and outcome-based revenue streams alongside seat subscriptions. If agentic workflows become embedded in customer operations, usage pricing could create a new expansion lever without requiring equivalent growth in seat counts.

Bear Case

Retention remains the central weakness. Asana, Inc. calculates reported dollar-based net retention as the simple average of four quarterly retention calculations. At 97% overall and 98% for the two reported higher-value cohorts, revenue from the measured existing-customer cohorts contracted on average before revenue from new customers.

Agentic pricing also introduces execution risk. Consumption revenue may be less predictable than seat subscriptions, while customers have many competing collaboration, productivity, and AI tools. Broad product availability does not establish paid usage, favorable unit economics, or durable differentiation.

The gap between GAAP and non-GAAP profitability remains material. Asana, Inc. produced a 10.1% non-GAAP operating margin after $63.0 million of total adjustments to GAAP operating results. Fiscal 2027 guidance calls for $858.5 million to $863.5 million of revenue, or approximately 9% growth, and an approximately 10% non-GAAP operating margin. Preserving efficiency while funding a new product and pricing model will be a meaningful test.

Hedge Fund Sentiment

The filings available so far reflect positions held before Asana, Inc. reported fiscal second-quarter 2027 results. Insider Monkey’s database showed 33 hedge funds holding Asana, Inc. at the end of 2Q2026, down from 36 funds three months earlier.

Conclusion

Asana, Inc. has demonstrated cost control, but has not yet restored net expansion within its measured existing-customer cohorts. The next evidence should come from retention crossing 100%, measurable paid adoption of agentic products, continued large-customer growth, and preservation of the 10% non-GAAP operating margin. Until then, Agentic Work Management is a credible growth opportunity rather than proof of a renewed expansion cycle.
