Down Syndrome Prevalence Incidence: 27.5 in 10,000

Ireland leads countries with the highest rate of Down syndrome, as its prevalence is 27.5 per 10,000 live births. Around 1 in every 350 babies in the country is affected by DS, which is almost double the global average. The elevated incidence is believed to stem from a combination of factors like older maternal age, but as the country’s prenatal care is one of the best worldwide, it mostly results in successful birth and survival of infants with Down syndrome. If elective termination isn’t implied, more babies are born with DS and have to strive for basic life facilities, even though Ireland ranks high in terms of social support.
