5. Baltimore, Maryland

Baltimore is the most populous city in Maryland and saw 7,041 violent crimes in 2022. Its latest murder data for 2023 shows that 260 people were killed in Baltimore during the year, making the city rank quite high in the list of 2023’s most murderous cities when compared to a similar list for 2022. Baltimore is also an important hub for international trade as it houses an important port and a trade center. The Baltimore port specializes in handling heavy equipment and machinery.
4. Dallas, Texas

Dallas has a population of 1.3 million people and is part of the fourth largest metropolitan area in America. There were nearly ten thousand instances of violent crimes in the city and 157 murders. In 2023, 126 people have been murdered so far, in a rather worrying increase that also sees Dallas jump quite high in our ranking of the U.S. cities with the highest murders. The city is also home to some of the largest companies in the U.S., including the telecommunications giant AT&T and Southwest Airlines.
3. Phoenix, Arizona

Phoenix is the capital of Arizona with 1.6 million residents. It houses several Fortune 500 firms as well as important military installations. Not only is Phoenix Arizona’s largest city in terms of population, but overall, it is the fifth largest city in America. Alarmingly, 137 murders have been committed so far in 2023 in the city, closing in on the 198 carried out in 2022.

Philadelphia is the largest city in Pennsylvania with a population of 1.6 million people. It is also one of the oldest cities in America since it was first settled in the late seventeenth century. Philadelphia also has a long history of Native Americans, which have lived there for far longer than the white people. It has a variety of important companies in sectors such as insurance, healthcare, food, and chemicals. The city also has a vibrant biotechnology cluster, and it reported 507 murders in 2022 along with close to sixteen thousand violent crimes.

Murders in 2023: 166
Chicago is the most populous city in Illinois and the third largest in the U.S. as it houses close to three million people. It also has one of the biggest metropolitan economies in the U.S., and one of the largest business districts as well. However, Chicago often gets flak for high levels of crime, and perhaps it’s unsurprising that it ranks first on our list in terms of murders as well.
