The Central African Republic, as the name suggests, is a Central African country. It gained independence in 1958 and has one of the smallest economies in the world at $5.48 billion. It has been ruled by a military junta for a significant portion of its history, and has seen civil wars with rebel groups taking over portions of the country as well as failed coup attempts. Significant portions of the country continue to be controlled by armed groups.
