Klong Prem Central Prison was opened in 1944 and soon became popular for being the largest prison in Thailand. It not only houses Thailand’s prison population but also has inmates from different nationalities. An estimate suggests that approximately 30% of the population includes foreigners.

During the pandemic period of COVID-19, five buildings in Klong Prem Central Prison were converted into field hospitals to treat the infected inmates separately. The prison has been used to detain a number of high-profile individuals, including political prisoners, drug offenders, and other criminals.
