5. Wow! Momo Foods

Number of Outlets: 665 outlets across 17 cities

Founded in 2008 by college mates, Wow! Momo Foods runs a chain of quick service restaurants specializing in momos. The chain operates three restaurant brands: Wow! Momo, Wow! China and Wow! Chicken. Nearly 60% of its revenue comes from the Wow! Chicken brand.

Wow! Momo Foods has 665 outlets in 2023. This store network comprises 400 Wow! Momo outlets, 135 Wow! Chicken outlets, and 130 Wow! China outlets. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Wow! Momo Foods agreed to share outlet spaces with Café Coffee Day.

While Wow! Momo Foods brands have traditionally operated separately, the chain is now shifting to a unified retail strategy. It is opening Wow! Eats locations that bring its three brands under a single roof. Wow! Momo Foods plans to open additional 250 outlets over the next two years. Additionally, the company has launched the Wow! Eats app for online ordering.

The chain has raised money from investors such as Indian Angel Network, Tiger Global Management, and Lighthouse funds.

Sapphire Foods operates KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell restaurants in India. Sapphire Foods’ fast-food business launched in 2015 with the acquisition of 270 KFC and Pizza Hut locations. The chain now operates more than 700 outlets across India.

Sapphire Foods ranks as one of the largest Yum! Brands franchisees in the Indian subcontinent. Yum! Brands is the owner of KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell restaurant brands. The chain plans to add more brands outside the Yum! Brands network.

In addition to India, Sapphire Foods has footprint in Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Sapphire Foods plans to have as many as 2,000 outlets in the coming years.

3. Monginis

Monginis is one of India’s oldest quick service food brands. The Monginis food chain is best-known for its pastry and bakery products. Customers can buy ready-made products or place orders for products to be prepared for them. Monginis serves dine-in, takeout, and outside catering customers.

Monginis has a presence in India and Egypt. Monginis has more than 1,200 outlets across India. In addition to cakes and pastries, Monginis locations also sell doughnuts, chocolates, samosa, and puffs.

2. Cafe Coffee Day 

Number of Outlets: 1,384 

Bengaluru-based Cafe Coffee Day operates a chain of coffee houses across India. The chain also has international footprint, with a presence in Nepal, Malaysia, Czech Republic, Austria, and Egypt.

Cafe Coffee Day is a vertically integrated business. It grows its own coffee in its own estates. It also makes its restaurant furniture.

The chain opened its first outlet in 1996 in Bengaluru. It grew rapidly in the following years, surpassing 1,000 stores by 2011.

At some point, Cafe Coffee Day operated more than 1,750 outlets before a wave of store closings began. The chain’s store count dropped sharply to below 1,000 following the closings. However, Cafe Coffee Day is opening more outlets and it now has nearly 1,400 locations.

Jubilant FoodWorks is the master operator of Domino’s Pizza restaurants in India. It also runs Dunkin’ Donuts and Popeyes brand restaurants. Moreover, Jubilant FoodWorks operates restaurants under its homegrown brands Hong’s Kitchen and Ekdum.

In addition to India, Jubilant FoodWorks has fast-food service footprints in Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.

Jubilant FoodWorks has more than 1,700 restaurant outlets across its brand in India. Its first Domino’s Pizza outlet in India opened in 1996. The chain continues to expand its store network domestically and abroad. It plans to open about 300 outlets by 2024.

Jubilant FoodWorks aims to open 240 to 250 new locations every year over the next several years. Its target is to have 3,000 Domino’s Pizza restaurants in India by 2028.
