The Swedish government introduced the Citizenship Act in 2001, effective from July 1, 2001. According to this legislation, Swedish nationals acquiring another country’s citizenship could do so without relinquishing their Swedish nationality, as long as the other government permitted dual citizenship. Similarly, foreign nationals obtaining Swedish nationality could retain their previous citizenship if their country of origin allowed for dual citizenship. The government took an additional step by permitting individuals who had lost their Swedish nationality by acquiring a second citizenship to regain it through notification before July 1, 2003. In 2015, the act was further expanded, allowing anyone who lost their Swedish nationality due to acquiring another citizenship to reclaim it, demonstrating Sweden’s commitment to flexibility and inclusivity in matters of citizenship.
