5 Countries That Produce the Best Engineers in the World

In this article, we discuss the 5 countries that produce the best engineers in the world. If you want to check out our detailed analysis of the engineering profession, its impact on the economy and the corporate tech sector around the world, go directly to the 12 Countries That Produce the Best Engineers in the World.

5. Switzerland

Switzerland is one of the top countries producing some of the finest engineers in the world, owing to a robust educational and corporate infrastructure. Switzerland is especially known for its contributions to genetic engineering. Switzerland also managed to build a 35-mile-long railway tunnel that is as deep as 1.4 miles under the Alps. Its R&D had a share of 3.15 in its 2019 GDP.

4. United Kingdom

The United Kingdom is one of the most prominent countries in Europe. Quality engineering happens to be one of the areas where the UK shines. Its capital – London, was ranked the 10th top location for quality R&D and talent availability for electronics engineering, by FDI Intelligence.

In software engineering, the country is home to companies like DeepMind, owned by Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG), which has disrupted the molecular biology industry with the unveiling of AlphaFold.

It is a deep learning algorithm that has already solved 98.5% of human proteins’ structures, which had perplexed molecular biologists since the 70s.

In addition to that, the company also recently introduced AlphaTensor, another deep learning algorithm that is expected to vastly increase computing speed through the discovery of more efficient ways for matrix multiplications.

3. Germany

German engineering is world-famous for high-quality goods and services. It spends a significant portion of its GDP on R&D, with research-and-development expenditures in 2020 making up 3.14% of its Gross Domestic Product.

The country is highly focused on industrial engineering and is one of the best producers of electrical and mechanical engineers. This can be backed up with the fact that Germany’s contribution to the global output in Knowledge and Technology Intensive (KTI) industries was 6% in 2019, one of the highest in the world.

The top German institutes for engineering are Helmholtz Association of R&D organizations and Fraunhofer Society. The country’s prominent software companies include Siemens and SAP SE (NYSE:SAP).

2. China

China has quickly emerged as one of the best producers of some of the top engineers in the world. It spent 2.40% of its huge GDP in 2020 for the purposes of R&D. Its Chinese Academy of Sciences and Tsinghua University are two of the top go-to universities in terms of quality engineering education.

In terms of talent availability and R&D scene, the FDI Intelligence recommends four Chinese cities in its top 10 locations for electronics. These include Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing.

1. United States

The US is the best producer of the top engineers in the world. Its schools like Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University and Stanford University are the top academic institutes in engineering, per Scimago Institutions Rankings.

On the other hand, its top companies in the field include Google, Microsoft, General Electric and Lockheed Martin among others. New York City ranks sixth in FDI Intelligence’s list of top places for electronics R&D and engineering talent in the world.

The US also had the highest share of global Knowledge and Technology Intensive (KTI) Industry output in the world in 2019, at 27%, per National Science Foundation. KTI products and services also comprise the largest part in US exports.
