Kanpur is a culturally significant city in India since it is located on the banks of the River Ganges which has a central role in the Hindu religion. The city is part of the state of Uttar Pradesh, and during the British rule it played an important role in housing the British military. In terms of population, Kanpur is the tenth largest city in India. Its status as a military station in British India also made Kanpur (then called Cawnpore) the center of the First Indian War of Independence in 1857 which saw painful atrocities from both sides.
