While IDC did increase its aggregate forecast for the tablet market by approximately 4%, and now expects over 122 million units to be sold by the end of 2012 and 172.4 million units in 2013, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s piece of the pie is expected to continue to decline over the next half-decade.

By the end of 2016, IDC estimates that the tech giant will hold onto less than 50% of the tablet market, while Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)‘s Windows platform is expected to have a 10.3% share by this time. In terms of overall growth in this arena, the firm estimates that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iOS will have a lower CAGR (20.9%) over the next five years than both Microsoft’s Windows (69.2%) and Google’s Android (21.0%) operating systems.
