DoCoMo Japan iPhone: The Apple iPhone from Japan’s NTT DoCoMo Could Become Reality

DoCoMo Japan iPhone: Much like China Mobile, the number one cell carrier in China, NTT DoCoMo of Japan does not currently offer the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone to customers. As the number one carrier in the country, it only makes sense that the two companies would want to strike up a deal sooner rather than later.

In an interview with Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun and interpreted by Brightwire, the president of NTT DoCoMo, Katoru Katō, said the company is interested in adding the iPhone to its offerings if they are able to reach an agreement with Apple.

While this may appear to be a match made in heaven, there are some obstacles standing in the way.

Here is a breakdown from AppleInsider on what is expected of Apple partner carriers, as well as what NTT DoCoMo has been able to accomplish with other smartphones:

“Apple requires partner carriers to sell a predetermined amount of iPhones per year and Kato said that DoCoMo can reach that number if the handset accounts for 20 to 30 percent of the company’s overall smartphone sales. The telecom expects to bring in over $11 billion from Android-related e-commerce sales by the end of 2015. “

As you can see, the carrier is having no trouble pushing large numbers of Android smartphones. One would think that an introduction of the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone would lead to more of the same.

Right now, there is no reason to believe that a DoCoMo iPhone will be coming to the market in the near future. While negotiations are only preliminary, things can speed up in a hurry. Despite the fact that the company is doing quite well selling smartphones from other manufacturers, it is hard to imagine a scenario in which the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone would not add value.
