Sony Corp (ADR) (SNE): Hackers Are Getting What They Wanted As Theaters Start To Pull Out From Screening ‘The Interview’

Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) hack attack has become a talking point in the media for quite some time now, since the hackers kept revealing some sensitive information about the company, its employees and its executives. Everything started with a movie named ‘The Interview’, which Sony Pictures Entertainment was making. This movie made comedy out of the assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Many believed that the hackers main intent was to prevent the release of this movie and as many feared, the hackers issued threat to theaters that will screen ‘The Interview’ movie. Due to this, NY premier of the movie was canceled. Bloomberg’s Caroline Hyde reported about this on Bloomberg TV.

Hyde said that the group named ‘Guardian of Peace’ hacked Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE)’s computer system and are getting what they wanted with the announcement about the cancellation of the movie premiere of ‘The Interview’ in NY.

“[…] the whole idea of the cyber-attack was to prevent the distribution of the film ‘The Interview’, which is based on a humorous line where the key is assassination of North Korea’s Leader Kim Jong Un. NY Premiere of ‘The Interview’ has been canceled, which was due to be tomorrow at the Sunshine cinema and the Landmark theaters has said, we are indeed pulling it,” Hyde reported.

She pointed out that Landmark theaters are indeed the fourth largest theater chain in Unites States with more than 2000 screens and they are not going to screen the movie at all. She said that this was mainly due to the threat issued by the hack group. “We recommend you keep yourself distant from the places at that time,” Hyde quoted threat message issued by ‘Guardian of Peace’ hack group.

Hyde mentioned that many people are fearing a 9/11 type attack due to this. She said that the movie is all set to be released in 60 countries across the world. She also mentioned that the three leading theater chains have not responded yet and she questioned if they will be pulling out of the movie too.
