Does Netflix have plans to release a Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) BlackBerry 10 app? While this is a question that many people have been asking, it appears at this time that the answer is simple: no.
According to a report by AllThingsD, “if BlackBerry is “in talks” with Netflix about a BlackBerry 10 version of the company’s popular video-streaming app, they aren’t going very well.”
While this may not sound like a very big deal from the outside, it is another blow to the BlackBerry 10 operating system as it hopes to pick up steam and become a formidable competitor in the smartphone space.
At this time, it is hard to pinpoint exactly why Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) and Netflix have yet to be able to reach an agreement. With that in mind, many believe that the answer is quite simple: there is no incentive for the company to create an app for this platform.
The same AllThingsD article goes on to further tackle this issue, getting clarification from Netflix:
“Sources say Netflix isn’t developing a version of its app for BlackBerry 10 — native or port. And the company confirms those reports: It has chosen to forgo the platform entirely for the time being. “We have no current plans for a BlackBerry app,” a spokesman told AllThingsD.”
Let’s be honest: right now, the BlackBerry 10 user base is not nearly big enough to compete with the top dogs in the industry, Apple and Google. For this reason, Netflix does not see any point in spending the time and money to develop an app for this operating system.
Could this change in the future? Most definitely. Will Netflix eventually change its mind? There is no answer to this question at this time. This will likely be based on how much traction the BlackBerry 10 operating system gains in the near future.
