Apple Newton PDA: Rare Apple Newton PDA Sells for Nice Sum Online

Apple Newton PDA: While Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has always been known for taking innovation to the next level, it is often times difficult to understand the company’s roots. After all, most of its past products have been buried underneath iPhone, iPad, and iMac hype – not to mention earning reports and other financial data.

Apple Inc (AAPL)Recently, a rare Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) Newton PDA was sold on eBay for $1,350. For the entire listing, check out the auction page here.

But this was not just any Newton PDA. It was a rare variant of the MessagePad 110. This device was released in 1994 with a dark body. However, the MessagePad that was recently sold had a transparent body. This makes it quite rare, especially among those who are in the business of collecting old Apple products.

Here is a brief excerpt from the auction page:

“Very rarely seen early Newton 110. This is a fully functional unit, and comes complete with original box (box is rather worn), instruction booklets, discs and original matching transparent stylus.”

“This Newton has been used but shows very minimal wear, mainly just a couple of bright spots at the bottom of the screen (see photo) and a few minor marks on the rubber side bits.”

“If you are an early Apple collector don’t let this one get away!”

As you can see, the seller is well aware that this Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) device is quite rare. That being said, not even the seller truly knows why the device is transparent when all the others produced at the same time had a dark body.

Here is more information from the auction page, touching on the rare features of the device:

“NOTE: As an amendment to this listing, I have had several emails from serious Apple collectors who have informed me that this may not be a prototype, but rather an extremely limited production model given to developers at an Apple conference.  They say this is still a very unusual item and highly collectible (I’ve been watching for another one to pop up on eBay for years with no results).  I received conflicting estimates as to how many were actually produced; the lowest I was told was 150, the highest only 1200.”

On a side note, it is important to add a couple of things. First and foremost, the Newtown is known to be one of the company’s biggest failures of all time. Yes, even Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has missed the target in the past.

Additionally, the device was produced during the period in which Steve Jobs was not employed by the company.

What are your thoughts on this sale? Do you remember the days of the Apple Newton PDA?
