Microsoft Surface Sales: Microsoft Surface Sales Update

Microsoft Surface Sales: Anybody who is a fan of Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) or the tablet market in general, is definitely going to stay current with sales data regarding the company’s Surface devices.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is one of the hedge fund industry’s most popular stock picks, and it’s always important to pay attention to the smart money (see just why here).

Bloomberg has dug up some information on sales numbers, giving a better idea of how these devices, including the much anticipated Surface Pro, has been performing.

Here is what the article had to say:

“Microsoft Corp. has sold about 1.5 million Surface devices, people with knowledge of the company’s sales said, a slow start in its bid to crack the fast-growing tablet market to make up for slumping personal-computer demand.”

As you can see, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is not keeping up with the rest of the tablet market. While this number may sound big to outsiders, those with knowledge realize that Apple “sold 22.9 million iPads in the quarter that ended in December.”

In other words, Microsoft has a lot of catching up to do.

Now that you know how many overall Surface devices the company has sold, let’s take a closer look at what Bloomberg is reporting for individual tablets within this lineup:

“Microsoft has sold little more than a million of the Surface RT version and about 400,000 Surface Pros since their debuts, according to three people, who asked not to be named because sales haven’t yet been made public. The company had ordered about 3 million Surface RTs, they said. Brent Thill, an analyst at UBS AG, had initially projected that Microsoft would sell 2 million Surface RT devices in the December quarter alone.”

Simply put, it is easy to see that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) Surface sales are not up to par. The tablets have been poorly received, and have been unable to compete with mainstays, such as the iPad, that have made tablet computing so popular.
