Now consider this trend: 10 years ago consoles and computers had the market all to themselves. Now they split it four ways. I wonder what additional platforms will steal away market share from consoles in the future. Though this trend probably will not lead to the utter demise of the game console any time soon, it still leaves console makers with a landmine-filled competitive landscape.

Conclusion

Despite all the hype around Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s Xbox One, Microsoft’s grip on the console market may be loosening. Sony provides stiff competition, a new console offers no guarantee of success, and smartphone/tablet gaming steals market share.

As we watch the next round of consoles enter the market, Microsoft’s Xbox may no longer be the blockbuster it once was.
