Is Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) Telling Indies to Come Back?

The Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox One is poised to be the next big thing in the gaming industry. We have been following this astounding story closely, and are looking forward to the day later this year when the console is finally available to the public. With all this in mind, we have an interesting story to bring you today.

According to a recent report by Gamereactor Magazine, Microsoft may be reconsidering its ban on independent game developers. While there is nothing yet from an official source, this is interesting information that could definitely change the future path of its gaming systems as well as the approach of indie developers.

Microsoft Corporation (MSFT)

An anonymous source is saying Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has changed its stance, and will soon be allowing independent developers to release games via Xbox Live for both Xbox 360 as well as the upcoming Xbox One.

This would be a big change for the company, but one that indies have been hoping for. Here is more from the article:

“Gamereactor have learned that Microsoft appear to be changing up their publishing policies to allow independent developers to publish on their platform. At least this is what we gather from talking to a European developer.

The developer with a long and proven track record is currently in talks with Microsoft about self publishing on Xbox Live. The new policy separates the very smallest of indie developers (often consisting of one or two people) with the more complete independent studios. The difference is that the larger, more established studios won’t be allowed to simply publish anything they produce as Microsoft wants to keep from flooding the market with software. There will also be some kind of unspecified selection process involved.”

If all this information is correct, it appears that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is considering a change in the future. But as you can see from the information provided by Gamereactor, this will not open the flood gates for anybody and everybody who is interested in pushing a game through Xbox Live. There may very well be a selection process involved, meaning that some developers will undoubtedly find themselves on the outside looking in.

There is no time frame on this change, so for now we will sit back and wait to see what happens next.

If Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) makes this change, it will be interesting to see how indie developers will react.
