John Thaler’s JAT Capital is a global long/short equity hedge fund based in Greenwich, CT. John Thaler graduated from University of Chicago with a BA in economics. He worked at Merrill Lynch’s investment banking division and a private equity firm, Spectrum Equity Investors, focusing on technology, media, and telecom sectors. Following this gig in Boston, he came back to New York to join Chris Shumway’s Shumway Capital Partners. John Thaler worked five years at Shumway’s now closed shop and left in 2007 to launch JAT Capital. The firm invests both long and short in equities in the Telecom, Media & Technology (TMT) and Travel, Leisure & Gaming sectors.|
John Thaler had more than $2 billion under management at the end of 2013. JAT Capital returned 30.6% in 2013. JAT Capital lost 6% in 2008 and gained 20% in 2009, 11% in 2010, and 17% in 2011. JAT Capital’s worst performing year was 2012; the fund lost 19.2% in 2012.
