Google Inc. (GOOG) Used Earnings Call to Hint at X Phone?

Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) is getting a lot of love on the market Wednesday after the company hit a home run in its Tuesday evening earnings report, as the stock has jumped more than 6 percent on the day. But shortly after the report was released, Google CEO Larry Page took to the phone in the quarterly conference call to discuss not only the report, but also what the future holds at the company going forward.

And while Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) bought Motorola Mobility last spring and has be slicing and dicing that division, there is talk that Page used the conference call to give hints that Google is working on a new smartphoneRumors of a Motorola-based Google smartphone , which would run on – surprise! – the Android operating system, have been floating around for a few months, but there are some tech writers, including this one, who seem to be trying to read between the lines of Page’s comments  Tuesday to lend credence to the speculation that a Google X Phone is on its way.

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)Page spoke about smartphones in general, and gave his thoughts about characteristics that he thinks a quality smartphone should have. “Battery life is a huge issue,” Page said. “You shouldn’t have to worry about constantly recharging your phone. When you drop your phone, it shouldn’t go splat. Everything should be a ton faster and easier. There’s real potential to invent new and better experiences.”

Droid Life, which is a Web site that monitors the news and movements of Motorola, has been supplying some information that seems to indicate that aa Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) smartphone may come to fruition in the spring. Google has said that it had inherited “12 to 18 months” worth of projects from Motorola Mobility when Google bought the company in May of last year.

What is the timeline for this rumored X Phone?

At the 12-month mark of that project inheritance timeline, Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) is expected to hold its annual developer conference, and Droid Life is reporting that may be the time that Google would announce the new X Phone, and it would hit store shelves and the online Google Play store sometime in July. However, due to consumer sentiment about the number of pre-installed apps on Android phones, it si being reported that the X Phone would have fewer apps pre-installed on it compared to other Android handsets.

What do you think? Do Page’s comments mean that Google Inc. (GOOG) is making an X Phone, or is this more just his opinion as a smartphone user? Would you be interested in an X Phone? And what are your thoughts on Google’s earnings report that came out Tuesday? Give us your opinions in the comments section below.
